Bowl Confidence

Bowl season is underway, and I’m in a bowl pool this year that’s right up my alley. If you’ve listened to our radio show, you know we like to rate things on a scale of 1 to 10.  As in “On a scale of 1 to 10 how bad does the BCS stink?” (10 would be stinks the worst and 1 would be stinks the least.)

The pool I’m in is a “Confindence Pool”. We are asked to rank 25 bowl winners in the order we think they have the best chances to win. A ranking of “25″ is the best chance to win…with a “1″ being the team that we have the least confidence in winning.

So, here are my rankings:

25…Nebraska over Washington in the Holiday Bowl. The Cornhuskers already beat the Huskies 56-21 in Seattle earlier this year, which makes this the Really Bowl.

24…Oregon over Auburn in the BCS Championship Game. Yes, I am that confident that Oregon will win. Cam Newton is great, but have you seen the speed the Ducks have? Auburn’s defense will not be able to keep up with Darron Thomas and LaMichael James and Co. for four quarters.

23…Oklahoma over UConn in the Fiesta Bowl. If only TCU was already in the Big East…we might actually get to see a good game.

22…Boise State over Utah in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl. If only the Broncos could have hit a couple field goals against Nevada they would be in a real bowl. Once Utah joins the Pac 12 they’ll be wishing they only lost twice a year.  Result: Boise State won 26-3

21…Stanford over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The Hokies have rattled-off 11 straight wins since falling to Boise State and James Madison to start the season, but Jim Harbaugh’s Cardinal is the most physical team Frank Beamer may ever see.

20…LSU over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. This is another bowl that might actually be close, but LSU has just found improbable ways to win all year. Don’t get fooled by the Mad Hatter stuff…as long as the Tigers aren’t facing 4th and goal at the end of the game.

19…Alabama over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. I’m second-guessing myself a little on this one, but I’ll stuck with the Tide. What I’d really like to see is a stare down between Nick Saban (whose first heading coaching gig was for Sparty) and MSU head coach Mark Dantonio.

18…Baylor over Illinois in the Texas Bowl. Ron Zook has had so much talent go through the doors over the last six years, and this is the second-best bowl he’s been in. Meanwhile, Art Briles has the Bears in a bowl for the first time since 1994. They limped in a little after losses to Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, but they’ll take that win over Texas any day.

17…Kentucky over Pittsburgh in the Compass Bowl. This is the year Pitt decided to get rid of Dave Wannstedt?

16…Nevada over Boston College in the Fight Hunger Bowl. This is BC’s 12th straight bowl game…but is that saying much considering there are bowls named “Compass” and “Fight Hunger”?

15…Oklahoma State over Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. This bowl has traditionally had some of the most entertaining games every year. Mike Gundy’s Cowboys are third in the nation in scoring and lead the country with nearly 538 yards-a-game.

14…Missouri over Iowa in the Insight Bowl. Iowa was one of the ranked teams at the start of the season that we picked to be out of the polls at the end of the year. Ding, ding, ding. We didn’t see Mizzou coming though.  Result: Iowa won 27-24

13…Michigan over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl. Quarterbacks Denard Robinson and Chris Relf are the offenses for their teams. Advantage Michigan.

12…Northwestern over Texas Tech in the TicketCity Bowl. I should probably have this a little lower, but I’ll stick with my gut reaction. As former Red Raider Mike Leach recently said when asked if he was surprised Tommy Tuberville’s 7-5 TT squad “They have everybody back and Texas is down.”

11…Georgia over Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl. Could Mark Richt survive if the Bulldogs lose? He may have proved more about his coaching ability this year than any other year.

10…North Carolina State over West Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl. Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson could be in the big leagues with the Colorado Rockies in a couple years.  Result: NC State won 23-7

9…Maryland over East Carolina in the Military Bowl. Hey Ralph Friedgen, you’re the ACC Coach of the Year…and now you’re fired! The aforementioned Leach looks like he’s the better bet to sell tickets than the big man.  Result: Maryland won 51-20

8…North Carolina over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. They had to pick somebody

7…Kansas State over Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Bronx wouldn’t exactly be my ideal bowl destination. I guess Albany was booked.

6…Clemson over South Florida in the Car Care Bowl. Clemson QB Kyle Parker could join the aforementioned Russell Wilson in the bigs with the Rockies soon. They’re both set to report to spring training in a couple months.

5…Notre Dame over Miami in the Sun Bowl. Al Golden led Temple to an 8-4 record, but the Owls didn’t get a bowl bid. Golden got a better deal when he was named to replace Randy Shannon as Miami’s head coach. He won’t run the show for the bowl though, he’s on the recruiting trail instead. For the record, early in the season we said Golden would be the next hot commodity among college coaches.

4…South Carolina over Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Eat more chicken…

3…Florida over Penn State in the Outback Bowl. Urban Meyer’s leaving again and JoePa keeps on ticking.

2…Wisconsin over TCU in the Rose Bowl. The Horned Frogs’ defense is very good and very fast, but Wisconsin is very big and hits very hard. Scott Tolzien is the best QB in the Big Ten not named Denard Robinson.

1…Arkansas over Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. After transferring from Michigan when Rich Rodriguez took over, Ryan Mallett finally gets to go up against the Buckeyes after all. He’ll have more luck than RichRod has had though…I think.

Boise State Vs. Utah…Yawn

Boise State plays Utah tonight in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas . Will you be watching?

It’s hard to believe that this is the best an 11-1 Boise State team can hope for. Great bowl system. Wouldn’t it be more fun to see the Broncos face Nebraska or even Michigan?

Instead of one of those match-ups, Nebraska is doomed for a rematch with Washington in the Holiday Bowl. We don’t have a playoff and we don’t even have good or compelling bowl match-ups outside the BCS title game.

The only intrigue for the Boise St.-Utah bowl game is the fact that Utah is leaving the Mountain West Conference for the Pac 10, while Boise is taking over Utah’s spot in the MWC.

Wake me up when it’s over…
